South Dakota Senator Expects Farm Bill Movement Early Next Month

The Senate is expected to mark up their version of the new farm bill in early June. South Dakota Senator John Thune says their farm bill will have to be conferenced with the House as both bodies are taking a different approach on the legislation.

He says the farm bill debate will be somewhat contentious not necessarily between the parties but between sections of the country.

Thune says while he supports work requirements for some parts of the supplemental nutrition assistance program says it will be difficult to get enough votes to pass a farm bill in the Senate if they go the same way the House did.

Thune is hoping they’ll get a new farm bill passed in the Senate this year.
