The Trump Administration has formally notified Congress of its intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. South Dakota Representative Kristi Noem says is not opposed to that because of the trade issues the United States currently has with Canada, including their unfair dairy pricing program.
However, Noem says she wants to make sure the Trump Administration does not sacrifice agriculture to fix the trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada and Mexico in the manufacturing sector.
South Dakota Senator John Thune agree that after 23 years it is worth reexamining NAFTA, but the deal has been beneficial for agriculture and so the areas that are working need to be left intact.
A majority of farm groups agree they want negotiators to proceed with caution, especially when it comes to the tariff-free market access they have with those countries. Last year alone it was worth $799 million in Canada and $1.4 billion in Mexico.
