School districts across South Dakota are working to figure out their budget needs for the next school year. Many are also working to finalize contracts with their teachers.
The legislature approved an increase of about two percent in state aid for the next year.
Vermillion Superintendent Dr. Mark Froke says that two percent increase doesn’t cover much.
Froke says they will probably have to look at more budget cuts for the new school year.
Froke says they were planning on a three percent increase for the next school year. He says their location forces them to be competitive on teacher pay.
Froke says the school board also approved an eighty thousand dollar increase in their opt out to eight hundred eighty thousand dollars.
