South Dakota Producers Battling Swine Viruses

South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says since May of 2013, South Dakota has had 38 cases of swine enteric virus diseases which include porcine epidemic diarrhea and corona virus. He says South Dakota is in much better shape than other states regarding the viruses but needs to remain vigilant in dealing with them.
Oedekoven says the best way to handle the diseases is through bio security where producers focus on their own operations to try and prevent it. He says South Dakota’s producers have done a great job with that.
Oedekoven says P-E-D virus remains the biggest concern with a couple of cases of delta corona virus showing up. He says P-E-D must be reported to either state or federal animal health officials and follow up is then needed with a veterinarian and bio security plan then developed.
