There is optimism in the pork industry in South Dakota from its leader. State Pork Producers Council President Ferlyn Hofer says while the trade war with China wasn’t what producers wanted it has compelled them to seek other markets and some of those he says are paying off.
He says despite the U.S. not being in the Comprehensive TPP, there is more American pork being sold to Japan. Hofer says the industry dodged a bullet when President Trump didn’t close the southern border shutting off U.S. trade.
Hofer says there’s also been increased pork business in South Korea as well as some business developing in South America.
There are positive developments on the trade front with U.S. negotiators still working to craft a deal to end the trade war with China and starting discussions on a possible bilateral trade pact with Japan.
