The South Dakota House Education Committee debated a bill (this morning) that would remove the authority of the South Dakota High School Activities Association to make policy related to sexuality or gender identity.
Lindsey Riter Rapp, an attorney representing the activities association said they made the policy to be ready if they were faced with that type of issue.
Diana Miller, who represents the large school districts, said the bill would push state policy toward discrimination.
Representative Roger Hunt of Brandon says he thinks the activities association and schools are afraid of being sued.
The bill was approved with a do pass recommendation on a nine to six vote.
