Governor Dennis Daugaard is calling the South Dakota legislature back to Pierre on September twelfth for a special session.
Legislators will be asked to pass bill enabling the collection of sales taxes from online retailers. The US Supreme Court upheld the state’s law in a ruling earlier this summer.
House Majority Leader Lee Qualm of Platte says they haven’t seen the Governor’s plan yet…
The legislative issue centers on the so called “Partridge Amendment” which was attached to the half-cent sales tax increase for teacher pay.
Qualm says he doesn’t think that will be solved in the special session……
That amendment would require the sales tax to be reduced as the online taxes rise. Qualm says the amendment was needed to get the slim majority needed to pass the sales tax increase….
The Governor has said he would like to see the new sales taxes in place by October first.
