South Dakota Legislators Question Universities Free Speech Policy

A South Dakota legislative committee got an update on the implementation of “free speech” policies on the six state university campuses.

Board of Regents Executive Director Paul Beran told the Government Operations and Audit Committee there is a wide split in political opinions…

Beran says they want to help bring students to the point of being able to form their own opinions….

House Speaker, Representative Steven Haugaard of Sioux Falls says the legislature passed the law because they believe the universities should uphold certain values…

The universities have to submit a report on their free speech and diversity efforts to the legislature by December first.
