South Dakota Legislative Committee Debates Tribal Checkpoints

The State – Tribal Relations Committee of the South Dakota legislature had tribal checkpoints on their meeting agenda Tuesday.

The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Tribes have put checkpoints on federal and state highways into their reservations in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus in their population.

Committee member, Senator Troy Heinert of Mission suggested developing a set of protocols to be used for consultations with the tribes on the checkpoints and other critical issues.
