The South Dakota Legislative Rules Review Committee has approved a loan program for farmers to borrow directly from state government. Committee member, Representative Julie Bartling of Gregory says to be eligible, the farmer has to have been refused a loan from a bank.
She says the intent of the loan program is to help those beginning producers.
Bartling says the loan program is designed for smaller farmers just getting into the business.
Those interested should get in touch with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. One of the requirements is that a farmer has to provide a letter of denial from a lending institution.
