The number of babies in South Dakota that died before their first birthday was down in 2013. The state’s infant death rate fell from 8.6 per thousand live births in 2012 to 6.5 per thousand.
Health Department Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth says the number of women who smoked during pregnancy decreased 15 percent, but that is still too many.

Hollingsworth says the number of women getting prenatal care increased.

She says families should know how crucial safe sleep guidelines are to the safety and health of infants.
