Maintaining a historic property can be expensive, but South Dakota Historical Society grants are available to help offset costs.
The $100,000 Deadwood Fund Grant, funded by historic gaming in the town its named for, aims to preserve historic buildings around the state.
South Dakota State Historical Society preservation specialist Chris Nelson says historic buildings are disappearing at an alarming rate. One of the grant’s goals is to offset the cost of using traditional materials.
Sarah Mannes Homstad of Yankton runs an architectural firm with her husband out of a historic Milwaukee Road train depot built in 1905. Homstad says the grant helped them replace 3 layers of roof.
Owners can get grants up to $25,000; and must match the money with non-state funds.
The next round of grant applications should be in the mail no later than October 1.
Applications can be found on the South Dakota State Historical Society website.
