The number of people driving under the influence of alcohol is still too high for the South Dakota Highway Patrol. During the month of June, almost every county in the state held saturation patrols and checkpoints. Major Dana Svendsen says 55 people were arrested for DUI during their patrol last month.
Svendsen says the patrol does sobriety checkpoints in select counties every month all year long. Choosing specific counties puts more troopers in particular areas at one time.
He says June was picked for the large monitoring effort because of the summer travel season. More checkpoints will be held in 17 counties during the month of July.
