South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is proposing a number of tax and fee increases to fund road improvements and construction. In the State of the State speech to a joint meeting of the legislature, Daugaard outlined the conditions of roads and bridges, and the costs to bring those facilities up to standards.
He says one part of the plan would increase the excise and fuel taxes.
Daugaard says part of the plan would help local governments, mostly counties.
Daugaard says the proposals would provide a big boost for road maintenance.
Daugaard says he took some of his ideas from the legislative summer study committee that looked at transportation issues.
