Members of South Dakota Farmers Union will begin developing future policy today through the help of a zoom meeting.  Members are invited to participate in the statewide on-line meeting to formulate the farm organization’s stand on key issues.  Doug Somke serves as the president of the South Dakota Farmers Union.  He says fair price discovery and transparency of cattle marketing ranks as one of the top priorities for the South Dakota Farmers Union.

Somke says South Dakota Farmers Union supports the Grassley-Fischer bill that addresses cattle marketing, but he says although the bill is a good start, it doesn’t go far enough.

The South Dakota Farmers Union president says the new farm bill should include a provision to improve the baseline.

As for statewide issues, Somke says Farmers Union members still would like to see a separation between the state department of agriculture and the natural resources.
