The South Dakota Farmers Union has come out in opposition to labeling cell cultured protein or lab grown meat as meat. President Doug Sombke says his group’s members have been asked by the USDA to testify on the labeling rules. And he says while lab grown or cell cultured meat may have some benefits, it shouldn’t be labeled as meat.
He says labeled meat must come from an animal.
Sombke says his group has a facebook page where people can list their thoughts on the fake meat issue. He also encourages them to submit comments to the USDA and FDA.
Sombke says any meat labeling rule should be handled by the USDA and not FDA. The comment period is open until November 26, 2018.
