There are four state representative candidates for South Dakota’s District 17, and education funding and teacher shortages are a hot topic within the race. Democrat Ray Ring of Vermillion says he’s not happy with spending for schools and hopes to use his economics expertise, if elected.

Marion Sorlien, a democrat from Viborg, says that she chose to run for the legislature because of the education funding problems within the state. She suggests changing the tax structure.

Sheri Kaufman is a republican from Vermillion, and is a concerned parent hoping to ensure that children are receiving a quality education.

Republican Nancy Rasmussen from Hurley says more attention needs to be given to the number of counselors and the support staff within local schools.
