USDA’s Farm Service Agency has started issuing payments for the Dairy Margin Coverage insurance program. South Dakota Dairy Producers Association President Marv Post says it’s encouraging the agency is following through on their commitment with payments starting this month.

He says while the payments don’t make producers totally whole, they are coming at a good time.

Post says DMC provides a very good safety net for especially the smaller dairies, those with about 220 cows and producing 5 million pounds of milk.

So far, nearly 10,000 dairy operations have signed up for the new program. Producers can enroll through September 20, 2019.
