South Dakota Dairy Operations Hurt By Bomb Cyclone

Some South Dakota dairy operations were hit hard with significant losses from last week’s bomb cyclone, due to structural damage on the farm and dumping of milk. Greg Moes, co-owner of MoDak Dairy near Goodwin milks around 1,800 head and when the milk trucks were pulled off the road due to the storm they quickly ran out of storage capacity and had to dump nearly 180,000 pounds of milk.

MoDak sells to Valley Queen Cheese in Milbank and Moes says unfortunately they didn’t have insurance to cover the milk losses.

Moes says there had already been structural losses to many dairy operations earlier this winter and this storm took additional roofs that collapsed under the heavy snow load.

Moes says dairy producers can’t afford those losses with the continued low milk prices.
