A group of lawmakers led by Congressman Ron Kind of Wisconsin are expressing concern at the trade agreement the U.S. has forged with Japan. They’ve written to the U.S. Trade Representative outlining concerns that the deal doesn’t provide a level playing field for dairy. South Dakota Dairy Producers Association President Marv Post says while their concerns may be valid and some changes could help dairy believes the U.S. can’t afford not to sign the deal.
He says no agreement is perfect but U.S. agriculture stands to win if and when the President signs the pact.
Post says if the U.S. fails to have a trade deal with Japan, America’s farmers and ranchers will lose out to those countries already in the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership.
Congressman Kind says he believes the deal with Japan fails to level the playing field for U.S. exports of cheese, butter, skim milk powder, ice cream and condensed milk.
