The third round of the North American Free Trade Agreement modernization talks are underway in Ottawa,Canada this week.
However the major topic on the table for agriculture is Canada’s dairy supply management program, which is opposed by the U.S.
South Dakota Dairy Producers Executive Director Roger Scheibe says Canada’s dairy system impacts filtered milk, which hurts U.S.dairy producers.
He’s hoping the U.S. doesn’t give up on the negotiations and withdraw from the deal. Scheibe says NAFTA needs to be preserved because both the Canadian and Mexican markets are important for U.S. dairy producers.
Scheibe is hoping they can get politics out of the discussion and come to a resolution on Canada’s dairy management supply system.
The U.S. under the original NAFTA has market access for all agriculture products except for dairy, poultry and eggs.
