South Dakota Crops Slow Development Will Hurt Yield

South Dakota Crops Slow Development Will Hurt Yield

Crop maturity continues to run behind normal nationally and in states like South Dakota. In yesterday’s USDA Crop Progress Report 56-percent of the corn was in dough stage compared to the 85-percent average. Dekalb/Asgrow Technical Agronomist Jeff Spieler says that’s a concern as the crop is in a race to maturity.

Soybean development is lagging, but not as much as the corn with 73-percent of the crop in the state setting pods compared to the 94-percent five-year average. Spieler says here he isn’t as concerned about the crop finishing out.

However, due to the late planting of the crop and lagging development Spieler says both corn and soybean yields will take a hit.

South Dakota also had record prevented plant acres at four million plus, which led the nation.
