The Biotechnology industry recently commissioned a study to question more than one thousand people about their concerns with genetically modified organisms. Eight out of Ten people said they were most interested in knowing if GMO or biotech crops cause cancer. South Dakota Corn Growers President Keith Alverson of Chester says that shows the need for agriculture to continually educate consumers about the safety and efficacy of biotechnology.

Other concerns from the study included if biotech crops cause an increase in allergies, if big companies force farmers to grow GMO crops and if they lead to increased food prices.  Alverson says there are so many misconceptions about biotechnology that producers need to get out and speak with consumers personally about them.

Alverson says it’ good the biotech industry is reaching out to consumers and has developed a web site to answer consumer questions. That’s GMOAnswers.com.
