The California Environmental Protection Agency has announced that virtually all use of Chlorpyrifos,lorsban in California will end next year. That follows an agreement between the State and pesticide manufacturers to withdraw the product. Keith Alverson who farms near Chester, South Dakota says he’s concerned what impact that decision could have on other state’s use of the product. He says Lorsban has been an effective and safe tool for farmers to use.
He says it’s concerning when states make regulations that can have an impact on other states and that’s why it’s preferable to have federal rules apply in those cases.
Alverson says it’s concerning that in the past when the state of California has made a regulatory decision that can transfer quickly to other states.
Alverson who’s a past President of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association and also served on the Board of Directors for the National Corn Growers Association says he’ll keep engaged on these types of regulatory issues and work with both SDCGA and NCGA on those.
