Nebraska Congressman Lee Terry along with three other colleagues have introduced the Farmer Identity Protection Act. It’s a companion measure to one introduced in the Senate last year calling for protection of producers privacy information. South Dakota Cattlemen Association President Cory Eich says his group backs the legislation and is hoping it can get passed.
The Farmer Identity Protection Act is in response to the release of personal information of more than 80,000 producers in 29 states to three radical environmental groups through a freedom of information act request in 2013. Eich says that never should have happened and must be prevented in the future.
Eich adds there’s no justification for the blatant disregard of producer’s privacy. To turn this information over to anyone isn’t just reckless, it poses serious agro terrorism threats.
