The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association has come out in favor of passing the conference report on the farm bill. The group is taking a different position than its parent group, NCBA which wants the measure defeated. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Executive Director Jodie Anderson says the main reason for supporting the farm bill is because it contains disaster assistance.
Anderson says while they were disappointed there weren’t any fixes to the COOL language in the farm bill or to GIPSA rules supported the measure anyway because of the need to help producers hurt by the October blizzard and earlier drought.
Anderson says while a fix to COOL and GIPSA is needed to avoid trade retaliation that can wait compared to the need for livestock disaster aid.
The House is expected to vote on the farm bill today.
