The amount of South American beef exports coming into the U.S. is expected to increase 11-percent this year. That’s a concern to the South Dakota Stock Grower’s. Executive Director Silvia Christen says that’s because those imports are coming from South American countries that have had foot and mouth disease problems.
She says while it’s important to trade with other countries, there needs to be enforced health standards that all nation’s agree to.
Christen says her group will continue monitoring inspections done by USDA to make sure proper precautions are taken with all beef imports.
Last month’s USDA forecast suggested U.S. beef imports will drop by 24-percent this year making room for more Brazilian exports. due to favorable currency values, improved access to importing countries and increased beef availability.
