The Obama administration announced Thursday that South Africa will open its market to U.S. pork. National Pork Producer Council’s Dave Warner says his group’s leaders are studying the decision and at this time they understand some restrictions on U.S. pork are still in effect.

He thinks the administration’s threat to suspend trade benefits for South Africa may have spurred them to partially lift the ban.

Warner says part of the reason South Africa put in the pork ban was due to their concerns over Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory System disease or PRRS.

Warner says NPPC will continue to work with both governments to get complete access to the South African market.
