It’s been a tough year for farmers in Southwest Minnesota many of whom have seen their fields drowned out. Minnesota University Extension Crops Specialist Liz Stahl says some farmers have been able to replant although there are more questions than solutions.
Stahl says some growers have considered to gone to planting cover crops as a protection against soil erosion for next year. She says there are many considerations farmers should keep in mind if they’re going to cover crops.
Stahl says to make sure and evaluate what types of cover crops you’re planting and what the seed rates are. She says if you’re doing any grazing, don’t let the cover crops get in the feed market as there could be herbicide residue issues.
