Some Midwestern grain elevators, including ADM, are telling farmers they will not accept Dicamba tolerant soybeans without European Union approval. South Dakota soybean producer Dave Poppens is a board member for the American Soybean Association. He says he hasn’t heard any local elevators saying they will refuse the traited beans because they aren’t approved in the E.U. and all other export markets are accepting Dicamaba tolerant beans.
South Dakota Soybean Association President Jerry Schmitz says the E.U.s refusal to approve this trait is based on politics. However, he cautions producers to know what their elevator will accept.
Poppens says while some elevators may not be accepting Dicamba tolerant beans now that could change during the season.
Poppens says most of the soybeans shipped out of South Dakota end up in Pacific Rim markets and not Europe.
