USDA’s Risk Management Agency announced this week they’ll give farmers a $5 dollar premium benefit on their crop insurance if they plant cover crops. The South Dakota Soil Health Coalition is pleased with the agency’s decision. Soil Health Coalition Coordinator Cindy Zenk says cover crops benefit the soil.
She says changing soil practices can take time and some expense so having help in dealing with those costs is beneficial for producers.
Zenk says there’s been an increase in the planting of cover crops by South Dakota’s farmers as many are beginning to see their benefits and how they improve soil health.
Zenk says anyone wanting to receive the premium incentive should contact their local Risk Management Agency office. For assistance on soil health practices, more information is available on the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition website.
