PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) is warning residents that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November 2025 may be delayed or disrupted due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
While October benefits have already been issued, DSS says future funding is not guaranteed. The department is actively monitoring the situation and remains in regular contact with federal partners.
Despite the uncertainty, SNAP eligibility rules have not changed, and DSS offices remain open. Staff are continuing to accept new applications, process renewals, and assist customers with questions.
Current EBT card balances from previous months are still available for use, and authorized retailers can continue accepting SNAP payments — though DSS cautions that this could change if the shutdown persists.
DSS is encouraging communities to prepare for a potential benefits gap. That includes promoting careful use of existing SNAP funds, connecting families with food banks and pantries, and helping to dispel misinformation by sharing verified updates.
Residents seeking assistance can visit dss.sd.gov, contact their local DSS office, or dial 211. Texting a ZIP code to 898211 also provides access to local resources.
