Wednesday’s speculation turned to Thursday’s confirmation that Craig Smith is staying on as men’s basketball coach at South Dakota.

Various media reports earlier in the week had Smith as likely to leave Vermillion to become the head coach at Drake.

Instead, USD Athletic Director David Herbster has confirmed that Smith is staying on and will have a new contract with the Coyotes.  Smith had been working on a one-year deal, but the new pact figures to be good for three years and approaching $300,000 per season.

Smith, in his third year at USD, led the Coyotes to the Summit League regular season title and was named Coach of the Year in the conference.
