The Summit League Basketball Championships and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority earned national recognition as a 2016 Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism by Sports Destination Management Magazine.

The record-setting tournament represented the lone college basketball event honored.

“Nominations exceeded expectations. We were overwhelmed by the volume and scope of entries — from team to individual, across all disciplines and all levels of play,” said publisher, Fonda Johnson.

Sports Destination Management Magazine, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market, announced the list of 2016 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism in November. The selected events were recognized and presented with event details in a special feature published in the November/December 2016 issue of Sports Destination Management Magazine. The entire article with full details on the winners can be found HERE.

The 2016 Summit League Basketball Championships made a nearly $8 million economic impact on the Sioux Falls region and accounted for over 12,000 total room nights during the four-day event, March 5-8. More than 65,000 fans attended the men’s and women’s tournaments and more than 4,000 all-session tickets have already been sold for 2017.
