.South Dakota’s biggest athletic rivalry continues this weekend with the South Dakota Corn Showdown Series.

On Saturday at 4:30 p.m., South Dakota State women’s basketball hosts the University of South Dakota in Frost Arena.

Aside from the athletic and academic portions, the South Dakota Corn Showdown Series aims to create awareness and raise funds for hungry families in South Dakota through philanthropy and sportsmanship. Feeding South Dakota, the state’s largest hunger relief organization, is the philanthropic organization benefitting from the Showdown Series.

“The competition between these two universities is really close this year, so these basketball games could carry a lot of weight,” said Lisa Richardson, South Dakota Corn’s executive director. “But no matter who comes out on top, the biggest winners will be South Dakotans who are down on their luck since this series raises food and money for Feeding South Dakota.”

Social media will play a big factor in fundraising prior to the game. For each retweet, like and share on Twitter or Facebook, and like on an Instagram post that contains the hashtag #SDShowdownFightsHunger SD Corn will donate $1. Fans are also encouraged to make donations at their First Bank & Trust branch or online at www.bankeasy.com. Donations will also be collected at the concession stands during the game.

Students also have an opportunity to help fight hunger by bringing two cans of food or donating a dollar at Saturday’s game and in return will receive a Showdown Series Paracord bracelet for their donation.

The series is structured against a point system in which each school can earn 24 points per year based on head-to-head competition and conference championships between SDSU and USD in a total of 17 men’s and women’s sports. Points are also awarded for athlete’s GPAs and philanthropic efforts.

“It’s truly an honor to sponsor the Showdown Series between these two exceptional universities,” said Mark Gross, president of the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council. “Student-athletes at both schools have represented the state well and they continue to excel in the classroom.”

The series is in its third season and the 2014-15 winner will be announced at the conclusion of the athletic and academic year. For a complete breakdown of the South Dakota Corn Showdown Series, visit http://www.sdcornshowdown.com/
