PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) will host the 58th annual Buffalo Roundup and 30th annual Arts Festival in Custer State Park this week. The Buffalo Roundup begins at 9:30 a.m. MDT on Friday, Sept. 29. The Arts Festival will run from Thursday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Sept. 30.

“It is going to be another awesome year for the Buffalo Roundup,” said Lydia Austin, Visitor Services Coordinator for Custer State Park. “In addition to the Roundup itself, the Arts Festival, and the fall season in the park make for a fantastic week as a whole.”

The parking areas for the Roundup, located near the corrals along the Wildlife Loop Road, open at 6:15 a.m. MDT and close at 9:30 a.m. MDT on Sept. 29. For safety reasons, spectators need to remain in the viewing areas until all the buffalo are corralled which typically occurs around noon.

The annual Arts Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. MDT on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Arts Festival takes place near the State Game Lodge and features western and bluegrass entertainment along with numerous vendors.

A state park entrance license is required on Thursday and Saturday, but there is no cost to attend the Buffalo Roundup or Arts Festival on Friday. Share the experience by using #SDintheField, #HifromSD, and #BuffaloRoundup when posting images to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Next year’s Buffalo Roundup will be held Friday, Sept. 27, 2024.

FLORENCE, SD – South Dakota Representative Fred Deutsch of Florence, SD, has announced his candidacy for South Dakota Senate, District 4, in the 2024 Republican Primary. This announcement trails the recently announced candidacy by another South Dakota Representative, Stephanie Sauder, who also represents District 4.

Representative Deutsch was first elected to office in 2015 by the South Dakota House of Representatives and said in a press release:

“Since you first sent me to Pierre, it’s been my honor to be your voice. As your state senator, I will continue to stand in the gap; I’ll continue to fight for you and your family to support agriculture, our schools and small towns, and especially our common sense, rural way of life in District 4.”

Rep. Deutsch says he is running because he “believes it’s important to protect our way of life, give hope to moms and dads, and leave this world a better place for our kids.”

South Dakota Senator John Wiik currently holds the seat and has reached the term limit, making the seat available.

PIERRE, SD – Aspiring young artists are encouraged to enter the 2023 Governor’s Student Art Competition.

Earlier this month, National Arts in Education Week was celebrated, and Gov. Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Arts Council announced the opening of the art contest.

All South Dakota kindergarten through 12th-grade students are invited to participate in the program. Selected student work from four age divisions will be exhibited in the state Capitol Building in Pierre from January through September 2024.

The submission deadline is Oct. 31. The four divisions are Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.

All artwork and the official Artwork Submission Form will be submitted electronically as a high-resolution jpeg image. Students whose artwork is selected for exhibition must also return the Authorization Release Form with a signature from a legal guardian.

Teachers and parents are encouraged to help students work on their submissions early so they have plenty of time to prepare their artwork and artist statements.

The South Dakota Arts Council is a state agency organized under the South Dakota Department of Tourism.
