Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa wants a long term solution to prevent flooding along the Missouri River. He says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs to update its Master Manual for managing the river. Grassley says the major priority for that needs to be flood control.

He says he’s also co-sponsoring legislation calling for the Corps to concentrate on flood control efforts along the river.

Grassley says there’s been a dramatic increase in flooding on the Missouri River since the Corps changed its Master Manual in 2004. The top priority prior to that was flood control. In 2004, the Corps changed the manual to balance the purposes of the river.
