South Dakota Senator John Thune is optimistic about his Ocean Shipping Reform Act advancing in the Senate. He says the supply chain crisis and shipping bottlenecks have made this a top-of-mind issue around the country which he hopes will help the chance for passage.
He introduced the bill in the Senate with Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar and says it’s designed to force ocean shippers to play by the rules and provide reciprocity for both imports and exports.
Thune says the goal is to improve the overall supply chain situation by prohibiting ocean carriers from unreasonably declining opportunities for U.S. exports. It also includes a dispute resolution process.
The Ocean Shipping Reform Act follows the House version which passed by a wide bipartisan vote in December.
