South Dakota Senator John Thune says trade will not be business as usual under the Trump Administration. That is already evident with the President pulling out of TPP and talking about renegotiating NAFTA. However, Thune says he’s still comfortable with the direction the administration is headed on trade after confirmation hearings with Commerce Secretary nominee Wilbur Ross.
He says Trump pulling out of TPP reflects his goal of shifting from multi-nation trade agreements to bi-laterals, where he believes the U.S. can achieve a better deal.
Thune says a harder line on enforcement of trade agreements isn’t a bad thing and it doesn’t mean automatic tariffs or a trade war with trading partners.
And Thune says that tough line includes the U.S. trading relationship with China.
