Mexico’s Economy Minister issued a warning to U.S. trade officials saying if North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations include new tariffs, their leaders will get up from the table. The Minister says his country refuses to discuss the 20 percent tariff President Trump spoke about earlier. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, Finance Committee member says he thinks the Mexicans are just jockeying for a stronger negotiating position.
He says a few weeks ago Mexican officials indicated they were preparing for the NAFTA talks.
Grassley says U.S. officials are also doing their own positioning for the NAFTA discussions.
The U.S. is the biggest trading partner for Mexico but the nation has trade deals with 40 other countries and is accelerating trade talks with Brazil and Argentina.
