There may be indications the North American Free Trade Agreement talks aren’t going well. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s talked to government officials about possible contingencies if the U.S. pulls out of NAFTA. He says the primary concern for U.S. farmers is what happens to commodity prices if the talks fall through.
He says one contingency he’s heard about is putting together some funding for commodity price supports should the NAFTA redo fail.
Grassley says farmers would rather get paid by the marketplace rather than relying on federal funding.
Grassley mentioned these concerns ahead of his meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.
