Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley speaking on the Senate floor this week raised concerns about Chinese state owned enterprises trying to avoid American court systems through foreign sovereign immunity. He says many of those enterprises have recently purchased U.S. agricultural operations.
He says he’s raising these concerns as the federal government continues looking into whether the sale of Syngenta to Chem China should be allowed. Grassley says some of the past foreign investments in the U.S. have brought dividends.
Grassley says however he’s scrutinizing whether or not foreign companies are avoiding U.S. courts as well as legal accountability for their actions.
Earlier this year Chem China announced it plans to buy Swiss based Syngenta for $ 43 billion.
