A state senator remains unsatisfied with how the University of Nebraska has responded to complaints that conservative students are mistreated on the four campuses.
Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard took to the legislative floor to tell colleagues university officials were slow to return his calls and discuss the issue; and dismissive of evidence he says he presented to both UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green and NU President Hank Bounds. Erdman says he’s pleased with some steps the university has taken.
Erdman says the incident which sparked his complaint…a clash between a conservative student and staff in August…was more about a lack of a code of conduct for faculty than it was about free speech rights.
Erdman told colleagues though officials have taken some steps to enhance free expression on the four-campus system, work remains.
Erdman does say university officials have written a new free speech policy and have acknowledged some incidents they hadn’t in the past.
