The U-S Senate has unanimously passed the Ocean Shipping Reform Act co-sponsored by South Dakota Senator John Thune and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. The shipping bill would support U-S exporters, and force shipping companies to accept goods ready to be shipped. Dean Meyer is an Iowa farmer and director with the U-S Meat Export Federation. He says the shipping and supply chain bottleneck at U-S ports cost exporters precious time and money.
Meyer says the differences between the Senate and House versions is the Senate bill provides a more detailed guidance on the allowable charges. He says the House measure takes a more aggressive approach regarding the carriers’ obligations to handle the exports.
