The Senate passed a cloture vote yesterday on compromise national biotech labeling legislation. Farm groups are calling on the Senate to approve the measure this week to provide certainty in the marketplace. American Soybean Association President Richard Wilkins says more than 3,000 products have been pulled from store shelves in Vermont since their biotech labeling law went into effect July 1. And a recent online survey of over 1,700 consumers shows they’re confused and find the on pack labeling misleading.
The survey was released by ASA, as well as the National Grain and Feed Association. President Randy Gordon says the survey also shows flaws in the Vermont law that lead consumers away from safe and science based products.
Wilkins say how farmers produce foods in a sustainable manner should be included on any biotech labels.
If the Senate passes the mandatory biotech labeling law this week it will need to be conferenced with an earlier passed House version, which is voluntary.
