Thursday, the U.S. Senate passed the USMCA trade deal on an 89-10 vote. Farmers for Free Trade Co-Executive Director Angela Hofmann says the agreement was needed to modernize the age-old deal and retain duty-free access for U.S. agricultural goods into both Canada and Mexico. It is expected to further increase ag exports by $2.2 billion.
She says input from U.S. farmers and ranchers was critical in convincing Congress to approve and ratify USMCA.
Hofmann says the U.S. approval sends a clear signal to Canada which will hopefully also approve the trade pact.
Hofmann says this action will also help with other trade deals the U.S. is working on including with the European Union and the phase two deal with China.
