The Senate Agriculture Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing this week on Wednesday looking at climate change and possible solutions. National Farmers Union President Rob Larew will be one of those giving testimony. His group in the past had attempted to address climate change by helping producers capture carbon credits in the soil. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says he’s shared with Larew how officials at South Dakota Tech have done research in helping producers capture those carbon credits and he’s expected to share that in his testimony.
He says the Senate Ag Committee has a great chance now to build on the carbon credit program Farmers Union tried in the past and improve on it.
Sombke says farmers have several practices that can be utilized to improve the climate footprint.
American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duval, Jason Weiler of Land of Lakes and Indiana farmer Brent Bible are also scheduled to testify at Wednesday’s hearing.
