Senate Ag Committee Chair Pat Robert’s national voluntary biotech labeling bill was scheduled to be marked up today in committee, but has been postponed until next week. National Farmers Union leaders say they’re opposing the measure. Senior Vice President of Programs Chandler Goule says changes need to be made to the bill to protect consumers.
He’s hoping some of their concerns can be addressed through amendments to the bill.
Goule says for national biotech labeling to work, it must benefit producers and still provide information to consumers.
Proponents of Robert’s legislation are concerned about a piecemeal of state laws that will confuse consumers and create enforcement problems.
