South Dakota women’s basketball guard Nicole Seekamp has been named the Summit League January Athlete of the Month.

Seekamp earns her second consecutive Athlete of the Month honor after leading the Coyotes to an 8-1 record and first place in the league standings to conclude January. The senior guard averaged 19.6 points, 6.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.

 

The Renmark, South Australia, native scored 25 points with 10 assists in a double-overtime win at North Dakota State on Jan. 14. She hit the game-tying field goal at the buzzer to send the game to overtime and recorded a steal on NDSU’s final possession to secure the win. Three days later, Seekamp scored the final seven points at South Dakota State as the Coyotes won in Brookings for the first time since 1990.

 

Seekamp also tallied a double-double at Western Illinois on Jan. 27 with 18 points and 10 assists. She had four 20-point games during the month. She shot 55.5 percent (66-of-119) from the field, 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from downtown and 90.6 percent (29-of-32) from the stripe. Seekamp is the only Division I player averaging 16 points, six assists and three steals per contest.

 

The month of January also saw Seekamp climb to second on USD’s all-time scoring list with 1,821 points and third for assists with 525.

 

Seekamp and the Coyotes (19-5, 10-1 Summit) host Oral Roberts (11-12, 8-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
