Friday, President Donald Trump lifted the Section 232 steel and aluminum import tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says they’ve been pushing the administration to lift those tariffs so the USMCA could get ratified.
Canada and Mexico will be lifting their retaliatory tariffs. Juhnke says that’s great news because U.S. pork faced a 20-percent tariff going into Mexico, which is its top customer.
National Corn Growers Association board member and Nebraska farmer Brandon Hunnicutt is also pleased the tariffs were dropped because Mexico is an important market for U.S. corn.
He agrees the tariff removal is a good first step in getting ratification of the USMCA, which is critical for U.S. agriculture.
For USMCA to go forward, the U.S., Canada and Mexico will all have to ratify the deal.
